Design advantages over a standard ball on rope.

1. Playing Tug: When playing tug with stronger dogs, rope can cut into your hand. Using this flat strap design distributes the force more evenly so that this does not happen. You will be able to play tug more safely, with less stress or chance of cutting to your hand.

2. Focus work, heeling and recall: Using the ball on the rope does not work well, because it needs to be held in place where you want the dog to target. It is unnatural to walk or move holding the ball in that manner. The dog will also develop a tendency to watch your hand. Using a clip on a string may also cause problems. The string would have to go around the handler’s neck, which may create discomfort. It also needs to be adjusted to produce the proper length for different exercises. Depending on the thickness of the rope, the clip and the type of clothing worn by the handler the following may occur: the ball coming undone, bouncing too much, or the ball not releasing when allowing the dog a self reward.

3. The velcro on the flat handle of the ball is sewn into place to prevent the ball from falling off prematurely. A second piece of Velcro will be included with your purchase and can be sewn onto any piece of clothing. The Velcro can be attached in multiple places depending on where the handler wants the dog to focus. The ball will release quickly the moment the handler wishes to reward the dog. A quick release can also be achieved by giving the dog permission to jump and grab the ball himself. Unlike a clip, the ball will stay secure while moving at a fast pace.
